CommentsMy father served in both the 1st and 2nd Batt SLI, I remember living in the Married Quarters at Colchester, three years at the Drill Hall House Yeovil, before going to India in 1939, we were at Ghorpuri Bks. Poona then to Multan for a year before my father transferred to the Indian Army at Bombay and finally my father ended up Lt. QM of the Military Hospital situated in Ghorpuri Bks Poona happy days. I wonder if there is anyone out there that has photographs of the Barracks at Poona and Multan, I would only be too pleased to pay the costs of obtaining them. Just to complete the story I got called up and served in the Royal Engineers
CommentsThomas Rogers served in the SLI 1/13th from 1854 to 1874.He has the Crimea and India Mutiny medals. His number was 3177.Thomas was a sergeant from 1872.Any information about the role of 1/13 in these campaigns appreciated. Thomas was born in 1836 in Stoneyford, county Kilkenny and attested at Clonmel in April 1874. After 20 years service he was given a medical discharge due to "Heavy duties during the Indian Mutiny". Thomas then began a second career as a prison officer at Gloucester and then Manchester. Does anyone know of any possible photo's that may include him ?.

CommentsI regret to report the death of my father in law Thomas Fletcher Meredith LtCol (MBE) at Penticton BC Canada at 0100 hrs 23 June 2002. Tom joined the SLI in Birmingham in 1936 because he liked the picture of the soldier on the horse and wanted to play football. He was serving in India when he was seconded to the Paras on their formation. He rose to RQMS with 150\151 and then the 1st?? after Arnhem. He was subsequently commission and served in Germany with the army of occupation, Gibraltar, Cyprus, Egypt/Palestine, and Malaya, to name a few (my wife was truly a globe trotting army brat) Following his retirement he served as an RO with the ceremonial branch of the Ministry. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret and is survived by his daughter Charlotte Lewall of Christina Lake BC Canada, and four grand children - Anna Lewall of Newcastle, Brendan Liard Lewall of Canberra Australia, Katharine Margaret Lewall of Cranbrook BC and Christina Meredith Lewall of Christina Lake BC A finer man I will not meet. He will be sorely missed

CommentsI am the grandson of James Willie Wood (1892 to 1972), James served in the S.L.I. at some stage in W.W.1 as a corporal. Prior to the S.L.I., he served in C Co. of the Northern Cyclist Battalion. Family tales indicate that he was posted to France at some stage during W.W.1, I wish I had taken an interest in family history when my grand father was still alive. Has any one come across his name in any records ? If so I would love to hear from you. The web page is very good and informative, keep up the good work.

Comments11/11/2001 - Remembering today Great-uncle Albert Hollins of Rugeley, Staffs, and SLI. KIA first day of the Somme 1916.
Commentsposted 6th November 2001 My dad Harold (Harry) Bell was a private in the SLI 2nd Battalion from November 1945 to March 1948. (He joined after working in the National Fire Service in Ealing West London as a teenager during the bombing of 1943 - 1945 ) He tells me there was a few from West London that joined the Somersets around that time, he was stationed in Northern Greece until the end of 1946 and they then travelled by boat to Trieste and then up through the Alps to Austria where he remained until March 1948. Some of his mates who he remembers from that time were Ralph Fisher who was from Weston Super-mare, Jack Grant, Ted Moreley and Jock Brown (who was from Aberdeen). Although he was too young at the time to have been involved in wartime combat he remembers the stories of great bravery shown by the 2nd Battalion who sustained heavy losses in action in Italy during fierce fighting in 1944.

CommentsAn excellent web site. congratulations to those involved. My personal connection with the SLI is with my Grandfather Arthur Nicholls who served in the 1914-1918 war. He was at the battle of the Somme and was injured, and left to die. To what degree he was injured I do not know as he didn't talk about it much. What I do know is that he was the last survivor of all ranks of the 1914-18 war. His story was taken by a couple of soldiers who came to talk to him in the late 1970. If anyone has a record or has read his story I would like to read it as we were not given a copy.
CommentsMy father joined the SLI in 1940,transferring to the 7th Parachute Battalion in 1942. He was dropped into Normandy on D-Day but, missing the target he spent the next few weeks in hiding, finally being captured and sent to Stalag VIIIC. While in PoW camp he passed his book-keeping exams! I also have a programme he kept for a performance of The Pirates of Penzance by the camp inmates. My father revisited Pegasus Bridge and Ranville for the 6th June pilgrimages in 1982 and 1984, which meant a great deal to him. He died in November 1986. I would like to hear from anyone who may have known him or has news of other members of his battalion.
CommentsVery nice website, I found it well laid out and very informative. I have been conducting a search for records on my wife's GGrandfather, who I believed served with the British Army in the Boer and 1st World War. His name was Edward George Berry, born (date unknown) in Tauton, England. He is believed to have been an officer (Major?) and immigrated to Manitoba, Canada in the early 1920s. Since he was born in Tauton I thought he may have served with the SLI. If anyone could assist in my search it would be a great help. Please feel free to e-mail me with any information.
CommentsI am researching the family history of my ggrandfather Robert Douglas Hamilton MCGARRY. I believe he served in the Somerset Light Infantry from sometime before 1902 until 1905 and served with the regiment in India. The marriage record states that he was a corporal age 27 and living at 13 Wood ST Taunton, Somerset at the time. In 1903 he was posted to India and went there with his wife Kate MADGE MCGARRIE. They had 1 daughter Kathleen in India and possibly a son who died in infancy. They immigrated to Toronto, Canada from India in 1905. I have so far been unable to find any trace of my ggrandfather's military records. Anyone reading this who has helpful info please contact me. sdawson@becon.org
CommentsI am hoping to find out about my grandfather, R.S.M. Jack Millard who according to my father rejoined the regiment at the outbreak of WW1 having previously served in India-Afghanistan and who survived four years of trench warfare unharmed until being gassed [survived] in the last German offensive of 1918.
CommentsFinding the SLI website is quite exciting for me. My father, Thomas Edward Bailey, now deceased, served in Ireland with the SLI about 1919. Shot by an Irish sniper, near the heart, he was repatriated to England. Subsequently recovering he was discharged from the SLI and came to Australia in the Mid-1920's. The major part of his working life in Australia was spent in the Australian forces, first with a short stint in the Royal Australian Navy and eventually considerably longer service in the RAAF including service in the islands (Papua New Guinea) during WWII, where he reached the rank of WO1. An interesting footnote to my father's story is that most of his close friends in Australia were Irishmen from Southern Ireland, and having fought the Japanese in the islands, his daughter-in-law, my wife, is Japanese (I met her in London some 30 years ago when she worked in the Royal Household at Buckingham Palace.) I manage the international affairs of a large Australian professional organisation. My academic background is Asian history, literature, and culture (particularly China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, but also a deep interest in other parts of South and South East Asia). In this context last evening I was reading about the First Afghan War. This caused me to search the Web for references to the Somerset Light Infantry (I still have some of my father's SLI badges).
CommentsMy Paternal Grandfather, Martin Joseph Bentley was a bugler in the Somerset Regiment circa 1890's. He was resident in Taunton, where may father was born in 1898. My interests are tracing the lifeline of my Grandfather, whom I can vaguely remember, and his service in the regiment. The website seems interesting on my fist visit. I shall return. Where can I get his regimental record Thanks Ron Bentley

CommentsYour web site brought back some interesting memories of The Somerset Light Infantry. I remember my stay, as an army cadet from Chard School, at the Taunton Barracks. it also brought back memories of Bangalore, S. India, during the 2nd. World War.

I did find three to check out. Being new to genealogy, I am only back to 1840 for Langdon. I know my gggrandparents were William and Sarah Rockett Langdon, and Thomas and Fanny Sullock Hartnup. CommentsHi, very interesting site. I have been trying to 'tie' in a THOMAS WALKER, details below, into my family tree. I was given an old 'memorial card' from an elderly distant relation. On the back it said ''my wife's uncle, a soldier in India. As I know that the 'wife' mentioned was 'one of mine' I assume that the Uncle, is indeed brother of my G. Grandfather. However, I have not proven that THOMAS WALKER, Pte. 1310, 2nd SLI is mine. Anyone out there who could help please? NB. Thomas' wife was called CATHERINE. Thomas was born Feb? 1866, and died 20.7.1909, buried at Greenbank Cem. Bristol, so presume had been discharged by then.

CommentsHave just accessed your web site, it is interesting as my father was in the SLI in WW2, having been conscripted in April 1940. He was in B Coy. 4th Battalion where he stayed throughout his service. I am in touch with several other members and may have information other people are interested in. I also noticed a message for Mike from Hans asking where the regiment was on 2nd to 4th of April 1945, the 4th Batt. was in Lochem ,Holland. Contact me for any further information.
CommentsIt's great to find a site dedicated to the men of the SLI - I am researching my family history and have discovered a Great-Uncle Walter (Roman) who died of his wounds after the Battle of the Somme. He was also a well-known Rugby player - Union for Bridgwater and Somerset and League for Rochdale Hornets!
CommentsI was please to find your web site and noted that my great grandfather is listed on the roll of honour. I would appreciate any information on him and his battalion on behalf of my grandfather, Denis Martin who served in the Wiltshire Regiment. Private Oliver Henry Martin 32035, served with the 7th Battalion, SLI and died of wounds on 22nd March 1918. Sadly, he has no known grave and is therefore commemorated by name on the Pozieres Memorial, France.

CommentsMy father (Albert Edward White) was in the SLI in Ireland, unsure when, but was based at Holywood Barracks near Belfast. There he met my mother, but before marriage in 1929 spent time in Egypt and ? India. My father was an identical twin and his twin brother, Arthur, joined the SLI when they were underage probably about 1919 or 1920. I would appreciate any information as to what Battalion they would have been in, where they would have served from say 1919 to 1929.

CommentsI am trying to find some information about Jack Cook who's real name was William John Cook but may have been known as John William Cook. He was a Corporal No. 5670260 killed in France WW2. The Army seem to have lost or mixed up his records and we think that we may be visiting the wrong grave in Normandy - that of J W Cook. Any information, however scant, will be gratefully received.

CommentsMy great grandfather Charles Millard was a Pvt. in the Somerset Light Infantry. I have been passed an engraved medal of his from the Boer war but unfortunately that's all I know of him. I would be very interested if any one out there can assist me more. Many Thanks.
CommentsI am the grandson of Lt/Col Cuthbert Brooke-Smith who took over command of the 7th Bn SLI when Lt/Col Ivor Reevs was wounded in 1944. He joined the KSLI in 1936 and served in the KSLI, SLI, DLI, and then back to the KSLI. He went to command the 1st Bn KSLI, in Kenya in 1955 he was mortally wounded by fire from his own troops. If any one knew him or of him I would like to hear anything they have to say about him.

CommentsMy grandfather, William Tanner Reid served in the SLI. He did not see much service, arriving in South Africa in September and by December was back in England. He picked up Enteric Fever while there. He told the story of being prepared for burial, with a flag draped over him, when he moved and avoided being buried alive. I have his enlistment papers, but is there any records of the Company he might have served in? Like your web page. Roger Reid

CommentsVery interesting site. My grandfather George Bryant served with the S.L.I at the turn of the century in South Africa. I will keep a very keen eye on this site
CommentsI am in the process of researching my family history - my grandfather came from Nether Stowey. My interest in the Somerset LI centres on 5667841 C/Sgt Robert Theodore Maxwell. He married my aunt, Gladys Modley, on 3 Aug 1940 in Bridgwater and they had two sons. Sadly, Gladys and the boys were killed in an air raid on Plymouth in 1944. After that my father lost contact with Bob Maxwell. Bob was a pre-war regular and CQMS, although I do not know which battalion he served with or even if he survived the war. According to their marriage certificate, Bob was an electrician by trade, and his address in Bridgwater at the time of their marriage was 120 Taunton Road, Bridgwater. He was 35 years old and a widower at the time of his marriage. If the name and details mean anything to anybody I would be most grateful for a quick Email. Many thanks, Peter Modley
CommentsI am researching my grandfathers war record (1st World War) and also possibly also my great GFs As we live in south Som my guess is that they would have joined this regiment. They were Harry Lionel Parsons and John Gibbons.
CommentsAn excellent site. My father joined the SLI to do his national service in 1957. He transferred to the Intelligence Corps not long after completing basic training but still has a lot of affection for the Somerset's. He was rather upset to see that Jellalabad barracks had been flattened for a new housing development with just "The Keep" remaining. But there that's progress for you.
CommentsI couldn't find anything on the SLI's involvement in the NZ Wars in the timeline. Is this an omission or am I mistaken in thinking they were there?
CommentsMy father Reginald S. W. Martin served with the Somerset Light Infantry 1915-1918 earning a Military Medal for bravery in the field. He was known as Dare devil Martin. He was gassed during the war. He has since died of Motor Neuron Disease [ALS] at age 78. My sister is now in the end stages of Motor Neuron disease. A grandchild and great-grandchild have same type Autism. I am convinced that these illnesses are the results of long term, genetic effects of my father being gassed. I would appreciate any feedback on these observations Valerie Martin
CommentsFound you by accident had two uncles serve in SLI during WW11.George Joshua Mills private no 2060823 and Horace Walter Mills Private no 5630892 both of whom unfortunately gave their lives. Do you have a book of remembrance? like the site.
CommentsI was a Lt., platoon commander, in Italy 1944 and a Corporal Leeks, known as 'Cycler', was recommended by me for an award for consistent bravery. This resulted in his being awarded the DCM. I should like to get in touch with him if possible. His last known address was the London area.
CommentsI've been collecting/researching medals to the 13th Regt / Somerset L.I. for almost 20 years. This site is a very welcome addition to the list of research sources. My particular interests are W.W.1. Gallantry and Casualties, particularly to my home town of Taunton. I would be interested in any information which members can offer.
CommentsI am looking for information in relation to Private Charles Frank WHITMARSH (known as Chick). He served in 'A Coy, 7 Platoon, HQ 4th SLI before and during the Normandy campaign, before being fatally wounded on the 31st of July 1944. He was taken to a casualty clearing station but died on the 1st of August. A chaplain, Revd AC AUSTIN of 10CCS BLA wrote a letter to his widow the following day. Did anyone know Chick? Is Revd Austin still alive? Was anyone you know in Chick's unit, or the above medical unit, as there appears to be no photograph of him with the family, and perhaps one of his mates took one with him on it.
CommentsI am writing because I would like to know if anyone has any information concerning my grandfather. He joined the TA in around 1937 and he rose to the rank of Sergeant. He lived in Wells (Somerset) and returned there after the war. He served in Africa, Europe and Italy, he was present at one of the battles for Monte Casino. I would appreciate any information on him. My address is: Mr K.J. Hann 24 Bramley Road, Street, Somerset BA16 0QE

CommentsThank you, a very informative site, I am trying to find a connection with a Jellalabad badge which has been in my family for over 100years, perhaps our GGGGrandfather who was a Welshman (Evans) served in the SLI. His family emigrated to Australia before the turn of the century, history prior to this has been lost.
CommentsG'DAY My great-grandfather fought and survived the Great War. Ishmael David Jenkins 1067. I'm looking for more information during this period.
CommentsI didn't know you had a website my grandfather served with you and he went by the name of George or Edward. I believe he served in the late 1800's and went out to India. I have seen the photo's of the regiment in India. He was the equivalent of today's Wo2 or 1 in the photo's he wears a Sam Brown. But that's all I know maybe I will learn more one day who knows.

CommentsIt was great to find information and badges of the 13th. My 3rd great grandfather, Sydenham Oxenham, spent 22 years with the regiment and was Jellalabad, Kabul and Ghuznee. He left England as a Chelsea pensioner to become a "Fencible" settler to protect the southern approaches to Auckland, New Zealand. Thanx for all your work in making this available!
CommentsHi there, I was recently on holiday in Bath, and came across your Regiments Roll of Honour in the Abbey. On of the name was Pratt S. Pvt. Research into the Imperial War Graves site tells me he died on 22 August 1916 in Iraq. I would be interested in finding out more about this young soldier and your Regiments history during this period. I would appreciate any information, and/or reference material you could pass onto me. Kind regards Stan Pratt
CommentsMy Great Grand Father, George Toseani was in the SLI during the first world war and was in India. He played the trombone and during fighting he was detailed as a stretcher bearer, where he was shot in the mouth by a sniper. If anyone can remember him or know of the time they spent in India, I would very much like to hear from them.

CommentsMy wife is trying to find out information about her father Frederick Henry Brooks. He was in the SLI from 1939 - 1946 and a POW in Stalag XXa. She has no knowledge of him or of his Army career. Any ideas where he might have been captured? Can anyone help with any details it would be very much appreciated.
CommentsI am looking through your battalion history while in India, particularly Poona during 1946/47. I would like to make contact with any member of the regiments during those years. Thanks RG
CommentsVery interesting site. My great grandfather was Samuel Dade, and he served with the 2nd battalion of the SLI in Kamptee, India in 1882. I found his details in the muster rolls, which are kept in the public records office in Kew. They list every man in both battalions for a number of years in the 19c. The reference I used was WO16/1462 for 1879 to 1882, other years are also there.
CommentsI am looking for information about my Grandfather, who served in the Somerset Light Infantry in WW1 as a RSM. CommentsMy father, Frederick Wheeler, was with the 5th Battalion SLI during WW2. He has become interested in contacting anyone who may have served with him, particularly around the time of an engagement in the Hochheid Woods. At the time of this event, I believe he was a sergeant and won the Military Medal for his actions. Later he was given a field commission. Any contacts would be most welcome.
CommentsI am currently researching a history of the campaign in North West Europe 1944/45 and I am keen to contact any veterans who would like to share their memories with me. I am not writing a combat history but a study of attitudes and behaviour, concentrating on such subjects as: eating and drinking; leave; souvenir hunting/looting; discipline; recreation and relaxation; relations with civilians; attitudes towards the Germans. Anyone wishing to contact me can do so on the above email address or write to me at 15 Carew Road, Thornton Heath, Surrey CR7 7RF. Thank you.

Grandfather, Daniel McIntyre joined the 13th Foot in 1825 serving until 1847. he served in the Army of the Indies and had medals for the general action of Jellalabad and the recapturing of Cabul.
