My father served in both the 1st and 2nd Batt SLI, I remember living in the Married Quarters at Colchester, three years at the Drill Hall House Yeovil, before going to India in 1939, we were at Ghorpuri Bks. Poona then to Multan for a year before my father transferred to the Indian Army at Bombay and finally my father ended up Lt. QM of the Military Hospital situated in Ghorpuri Bks Poona happy days. I wonder if there is anyone out there that has photographs of the Barracks at Poona and Multan, I would only be too pleased to pay the costs of obtaining them. Just to complete the story I got called up and served in the Royal Engineers

Thomas Rogers served in the SLI 1/13th from 1854 to 1874.He has the Crimea and India Mutiny medals. His number was 3177.Thomas was a sergeant from 1872.Any information about the role of 1/13 in these campaigns appreciated. Thomas was born in 1836 in Stoneyford, county Kilkenny and attested at Clonmel in April 1874. After 20 years service he was given a medical discharge due to "Heavy duties during the Indian Mutiny". Thomas then began a second career as a prison officer at Gloucester and then Manchester. Does anyone know of any possible photo's that may include him ?.

My great-grandfather was William Hake and he was in the SLI, my Mom says that he was killed at Gallipoli. I have the original badge that was worn on his uniform and it has Jallabad on the badge. I also have a photo of him in uniform. He was married to Fanny Elizabeth Andrews. The only other information that I have is that he was in the Leinster Regiment. This site is great, and I would love to see more information on it. Can we add info of someone we know to the site.

I regret to report the death of my father in law Thomas Fletcher Meredith LtCol (MBE) at Penticton BC Canada at 0100 hrs 23 June 2002. Tom joined the SLI in Birmingham in 1936 because he liked the picture of the soldier on the horse and wanted to play football. He was serving in India when he was seconded to the Paras on their formation. He rose to RQMS with 150\151 and then the 1st?? after Arnhem. He was subsequently commission and served in Germany with the army of occupation, Gibraltar, Cyprus, Egypt/Palestine, and Malaya, to name a few (my wife was truly a globe trotting army brat) Following his retirement he served as an RO with the ceremonial branch of the Ministry. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret and is survived by his daughter Charlotte Lewall of Christina Lake BC Canada, and four grand children - Anna Lewall of Newcastle, Brendan Liard Lewall of Canberra Australia, Katharine Margaret Lewall of Cranbrook BC and Christina Meredith Lewall of Christina Lake BC A finer man I will not meet. He will be sorely missed

I have a complete photo album that he compiled of pictures of people and places. Some in Peking of a Cholera outbreak and of Cawnpore monument. His name was J.E. Eyre. Any information is greatly appreciated as I would love to provide copies of the photos which are in excellent shape to the family and perhaps the museum. I tried writing to the address on your page, but it was returned addressee unknown. Thank you!

He landed in France approx D-Day + 11 and was evacuated wounded approx D-Day +20 having lost his right leg. I have some pictures which I will attempt to scan and display. My father died in 1969 without leaving a will. His estate was proved by using the 'Soldiers Will' in his pay book which he had retained! Stuart Johnson

posted 6th November 2001 My dad Harold (Harry) Bell was a private in the SLI 2nd Battalion from November 1945 to March 1948. (He joined after working in the National Fire Service in Ealing West London as a teenager during the bombing of 1943 - 1945 ) He tells me there was a few from West London that joined the Somersets around that time, he was stationed in Northern Greece until the end of 1946 and they then travelled by boat to Trieste and then up through the Alps to Austria where he remained until March 1948. Some of his mates who he remembers from that time were Ralph Fisher who was from Weston Super-mare, Jack Grant, Ted Moreley and Jock Brown (who was from Aberdeen). Although he was too young at the time to have been involved in wartime combat he remembers the stories of great bravery shown by the 2nd Battalion who sustained heavy losses in action in Italy during fierce fighting in 1944.

The following question was asked of me: I wonder if any of your fellow researchers would have any information on the 13th foot during
the Indian mutiny. In my collection I have a renamed mutiny medal, the renaming is contemporary to the period. It is named (engraved)
4071 Pte. M. Brown 1st Bn 13th PARLI. The medal has the bar Delhi, in Gordons' book he does not list the 13th as being at Delhi. Was
there a detachment from the regiment entitled to the bar? I would be delighted if any of your associates could pass on some information
about Pte. Brown.

If you can, please let me know and I will pass on the information. Thanks, Mike. mailto:mike@lightinfantry.org

Greetings, My GGrandfather, Albert Charles SMITH (b. Wells, 1857) is rumoured amongst the family to have served in the SLI (or 13th
Regiment of Foot) in the Sudan- one would expect this to be around the late 1870s.

Are there records covering this period? regards, Greg Patch  mailto:archnex@one.net.au

My Grandfather Edwin Morris and his brother Frederick Morris both joined the SLI and served in the WW1. His brother was killed in the

It was wonderful to find your web site. I am trying to find out more about my Great Great Uncle Private Charles Edward Phelps, No.
22513, E Company 3rd Battalion SLI. I have written to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and they have confirmed that he
died in England on December 10th 1918 and was buried in a War Grave in Twickenham Parochial Cemetery, Percy Road, Whitton. I was
pleased to find his name on the Somerset County War Memorial on your pages! I intend to write to the SLI Office, but wondered if
anyone might know which battle(s) E Company, 3rd Battalion were engaged in during 1918. I'm not sure when he was wounded (he may
have been gassed), but it must have been some time during the Summer of 1918. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I have found one. John was a Lt. in the 1st battalion also in 1946-1947, he is 6 foot 5 inches , had ginger hair, probably white now, and
loved his gin and tonic. Probably lives around Oxford and had a cousin called Heloise. I haven't seen him in 50 years and would like to

I have just found your web site and it looks great!

My name is Paul Ricketts, and I work for Jane's Information Group ( 'Jane's Fighting Ships' and all that). I am extremely interested in
military history and would like to know more about the Somerset's.

My Granddad fought in WWI in the Somerset's and I am proud and intrigued with his military history ....

Arthur Muller joined the Somerset's in 1917 at the age of 17. He used his brother John's ID to get into the army (at 17 he was under age). Arthur initially tried the Navy but with a surname of 'Muller' they would not accept him ! so he joined the Somerset's.

Arthur fought at Passchendaele and was invited to the opening of the Menin Gate (in Ypres) but could not afford to go. A great
disappointment to him as a lot of his comrades are inscribed on the walls of the monument.

As well as Passchendaele my granddad was posted to Palestine.

I would really like to know more about the Somerset's, particularly during WWI, to try and put together a cartographic representation of
what the Somerset's did at the time, for my Mother.

Please feel free to send info to mailto:paricketts.msn.com

I look forward to hearing from you, best regards, Paul Ricketts

Co-incidentally although my family live in Fareham (Hants) and Midhurst (Sussex), I was studying Land Surveying and Cartography at
Somerset College of Art and Technology, exactly 70 years after my Granddad was there.

Dear Mr. Young

I enjoyed your Web page very much and it is pleasing to see people like your self-take such interesting military history.

I am searching for my third great grandfather Capt. Michael Anthony Blake (Also known as Anthony Blake) of the 13th (1st Somersetshire)
Regiment of foot. He first appears in the 1806 Army list as Lt. Blake with a seniority date of July 11,1805. He was promoted to Captain
on June 10,1813, and went on half pay on March 7, 1816. The last time he appeared on the Army list is 1825. His name does not appear
to be among he casualties of deaths, retirements or resignations. I have also checked the PRO for death and death duty register. There
appears to be no will in High or Lower Courts.

In your research of the regiment, do you have a list of the officers and how they completed their service or were removed from the
Army list?.

Any help you might be able to give me in this puzzle would be most appreciated. Thank You.

My father served in the Regiment in WW2. Private 5678513 JOSEPH WILSON was called up in June 1940 and posted to C Company, 5th
Battalion, in October 1940. Promoted to Corporal in April 1942, he was posted to 2nd Battalion in Gibraltar in July 1942. After almost 2
years in Gib, 2nd Battalion sailed to Egypt (Alaqua Camp) for intensive battle training and then on to Italy in March 1944. My father (now)
Lance Sergeant Wilson was wounded, we think, at the Battle of the Garigliano in May 1944. His hearing was badly affected and therefore
was not allowed back to his Battalion, so on return to duty in July 1944 transferred to the RAOC. He was very proud of his regiment and
after the war attended regimental reunions most years up to his death in 1984. I'd be glad to hear from anyone who knew him.
