| Message : | Back in National Service days I was trained along with many other West Country lads with the Durham Light Infantry, then was transferred to the Somerset & Cornwall Light Infantry (SCLI), which had just undergone amalgamation. All these years later I retain strong links with the Durham lads besides my own West Country pals, this sense of belonging is vital to any combined force which is to act solidly together. I just wonder how many more amalgamations the British Army Regimental system can stand.I have three large military websites and receive dozens of Emails every day worldwide, a great many from sons and grandsons enquiring about a relatives service, of which they are very proud, all express the feeling of belonging. The New Regiments being created by the Top Brass are in my opinion eroding the military family to such a degree that I doubt whether the exercise will truly be a success. |

| Message : | I'm researching my gt gt grandfather Frederick Manins who served in Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry during WW1. I have found a medal card record for him at National Archives site (British Star of Victory 1914-15 France)and have been told that he was wounded during Somme campaign. The entry at National Archives is barely legible and I can only make out latter part of the regiment no 5519. Anyone have any further details, or ideas on accessing military history records? Any help much appreciated. |

| Message : | I understand the DLI was stationed at least for a short while in Gilford Co Down Northern Ireland app 1941. Does anyone remember being there, could you please confirm dates they were there, what company of DLI was billetted there. The site was used as a prisoner of war camp. I do not think the DLI troops actually guarded the German prisoners, but I'm not sure. My little bit of information came from a former DLI soldier called Johnnie Howie who came to Gilford at that time and met and married a local girl called Maggie Harper. After the war Johnnie took up residence here although his own family had lived in England. Unfortunately Johnnie died about one month ago having been predeceased by his wife some years ago. I am researching Gilford in the war years and would really appreciate if if someone would contact me with any information about DLI. I am especially interested in where the DLI who were stationed at Gilford had been before they came to this area and where they went later in the war. I look forward to hearing from someone. Many thanks |

| Message : | Hello All, My name is Douglas Bentley, nephew to Pte. Douglas Gordon Bennett, "A" Company - 5th DCLI, Service No. 1682581, for whom I am named after. If you view the DCLI "WW 2 Roll of Honour" I am proud to point out that Uncle Douglas has the only link to the photo gallery. I invite you to meet my uncle and to read his last letter home before he was killed in action on Nov 19th, 1944 in the Geilenkirchen Wood. I would also like to acknowledge and say hello to my friend Norbert Rosin, formerly of the E3A Component of NATO's AWAC force based at Geilenkirchen who was instrumental in providing me with much information and many pictures. I met with Norbert "face to face" over the Father's Day Weekend in 2000 at the Hamilton International Air Show. He is a true International Ambassador, Historian and Friend to all who seek knowledge of this time period and the Battle for Geilenkirchen. All the best, and I will conclude my message by re-signing as I did back in November of 1999. 04 Nov 1999 Remembrance Day is upon us once again when we pay homage to those that paid the ultimate price for our freedom. To forget the price they paid, dooms us to repeat the mistakes of so long ago. "We Shall Remember Them. "My Uncle's death was more than likely a relief to him. Undoubtedly he was cold, wet, hungry and tired. Still, he died much to soon. Thank you to Mike Young for this opportunity to tell of my family's loss and the price it paid. Indeed an excellent site. Although my Uncle's loss was devastating to my Mother and her family, I know that Douglas himself would be pleased to hear of my friendship with Norbert. I know that my Uncle Wally (now deceased after a long life) would end this message this way. Good Night Pal. |

| Message : | IMPORTANT TO OLD SOLDIERS! “LAWRENCE OF ARABIA” As you all know, the Somerset & Cornwall Light Infantry provided the “Officers” seen in the 1962 David Lean film “Lawrence of Arabia” – lately voted “the best film ever made”. The actual soldiers, who were Spanish and Moroccan, were trained by WO2 (now Major) Gordon Besford. There is only ONE 35mm copy of the film left in the world, and the owners of the Wellesley Cinema in Wellington, Somerset, have got hold of it!!! They are showing the film for three days only, on Monday 17th May until Wednesday 19th May 2004. It starts at 1915hrs and will end at about 2300hrs on each of the three days. My step-son, who is a Projectionist at the cinema, tells me that this will probably be the LAST TIME this 35mm film is ever shown. If you can make it, especially if you were actually in the film, you just HAVE to go and see it. It will be your last chance. You can contact the cinema thus: Telephone 01823 66 66 68 or by e-mail at: wellesleycinema@aol.com If you can come, please introduce yourself to me. Peter Vile |
