Message : Here I am on these pages yet again. It's always nice to read the serious messages. It's especially nice to know that the old soldiers are still being remembered all over the world. As usual I am renewing my offer to lay flowers and take photos of a headstone for anyone wishing to pay respects to a lost loved one, friend, comrade or relative who is buried in the Kleve area. We shall be attending the memorial service in November so please let me know before then giving Cemetery, name and where possible grave number, if you would like us to perform this little gesture of respect for those who gave their lives for us all. I know that in spite of all the organised visits that have taken place this year, there will be some of you who for one reason or another, just couldn't take part. Susan Burns

Message : my father william blyth barron was a dli bandsman of the 7th battalion ( bugler )served in germany during WW2 and was de-mobed from arnhem at the end of the war - he was very proud of his regiment and in the later years of his life did tell me much about his time in germany during the war, including the story of he and some of his fellow bandsmen that came accross some instruments in an abandoned village, these instruments were readily adopted and put to good use for a time, but on comming home all troops were told no souvenirs were to be taken back to england, anyone caught with them would be punished,so the only available disposal site was a nearby well, dad said it was one of the worst things in his lifelong career in music that he had to do.so somewhere on route home in germany there is a well full of musical instruments that provided much welcome entertainment whenever possible.

Message : Hi, Having discovered your excellent web-site by chance, I felt that I ought to share my recent discovery with you.My father William Raitt served with the 6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry and was evacuated from Dunkirk on June 2nd 1940.I found this information from an 8 page letter which he had written to his brother Thomas immediately after the event. He writes 'I managed to get back with a bit of a struggle, of course there are a few Spennymoor boys missing but nothing definite is known yet, only Sgt Peb [or Pete] Waterworth was killed for definite. The last 5 days in action I was with Jake Wrakes mob, 2nd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers.' Page three he continues 'On the train when I was going for my 48 hour leave I met Henry Taylor....' My father had never spoken vey much about his war-time experiences and so this letter has proven to be a real eye-opener for me. The reason for me sending this message is that I wonder do any of these names mean anything to anyone? The letter address reads: Reg. No. 4444168 Pte. W Raitt 'C' Company 6th Battalion DLI. Yours in anticipation Fred Raitt

Message : My late father, John Applegarth of Bolden Colliery in the then named County Durham, joined the DLI early in WW1. Because of his mining experiece working with Pit ponies he was designated as a driver. In those days this normally meant driving horses up the line as opposed to motor vehicles. Like so many other WW1 veterans dad did not like to talk too much about the war but I do know that he was in at least one of the battles of YPRES. He was also sent to Archangel in Russia at the latter end of the war with his battalion to lend support to the Tsar. I would like any information about the DLI of this period including battles, postings and any related facts. Is there anyone out there who can help me with this? Thank you, John Applegarth Jr.

Further my previous guest book entry of 2001, I now have a website devoted to the 16th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry at www.16dli.net Within the website there are many partially captioned group photographs, including the 1942 company photos of B and D Companies and the Battalion's Sergeants, the 1944 Officers' group photo and the 1944 Signal Platoon plus a detailed Roll of Honour and a gallantry awards listing. Further help in placing names to faces on these photos—and in tracing the long-lost 1942 C Company photo (featuring CSM Arthur Pearson), would be greatly appreciated.

Message : IMPORTANT TO OLD SOLDIERS! “LAWRENCE OF ARABIA” As you all know, the Somerset & Cornwall Light Infantry provided the “Officers” seen in the 1962 David Lean film “Lawrence of Arabia” – lately voted “the best film ever made”. The actual soldiers, who were Spanish and Moroccan, were trained by WO2 (now Major) Gordon Besford. There is only ONE 35mm copy of the film left in the world, and the owners of the Wellesley Cinema in Wellington, Somerset, have got hold of it!!! They are showing the film for three days only, on Monday 17th May until Wednesday 19th May 2004. It starts at 1915hrs and will end at about 2300hrs on each of the three days. My step-son, who is a Projectionist at the cinema, tells me that this will probably be the LAST TIME this 35mm film is ever shown. If you can make it, especially if you were actually in the film, you just HAVE to go and see it. It will be your last chance. You can contact the cinema thus: Telephone 01823 66 66 68 or by e-mail at: wellesleycinema@aol.com If you can come, please introduce yourself to me. Peter Vile
