| Message : | My grandfather served with the HLI 1st & 2nd Bat.from 1908(Fort George) as a I have a good descriptive Obituary of him from then out of the archives of the HLI chronicle 1932- being the year he died aged 41 @ Edinburgh Castle. I know that he must have been stationed in Mullingar, Ireland as my father was born there in 1912. Grandfather saw service WW1, was wounded in 1916 then went to Mesopotamia. I have his history after that. Question 1) Why would he have been in Mullingar in 1912 & 2) where can I write to get a full service record of him? would it be Kew or Scotland? Thank you for any help you maybe able to offer. |

| Message : | My father, Sjt Stanley Buckley was in the HLI City of Glasgow Regiment during WW2. He died in action in 1945. My sister and I are trying to find out anything we can about his life during the war. Our mother mentioned that he had done some boxing for the army, had been a PTI instructor, and had been stationed in Barnard Castle and Crieff and at one point named her house Netherdale saying it was a place where my father had been. We really know very little other than that he had served a short while in France, and went to Germany in 1944. He was wounded fatally at somewhere called Easter Bridge which I believe was somewhere near Düsseldorf. We would very much welcome any information about the regiment during the war years. I understand that there was some connection with the Canadian HLI. I hope that there is someone, somewhere who can enlighten us. Many thanks |

So far I have visited 3 or 4 War Cemetries within easy reach of Kleve including Overloon, Mook and Jonkerbos. As in the past, I would be only to pleased to lay flowers and take photographs on behalf of those who can't attend. If you would like me to do so, please get in touch. | Message : | Like most of the postings, I'd be really grateful for any information. My dad, Alexander Stewart Osprey was in the HLI. He never spoke very much about it, to the extenct that i don't know, division, army number or when he was recruited. But here are the bits and pieces I remember. He lived in Springburn Glasgow, or thereabouts. As a child he appeared in a couple of promotional films for Glasgow council, I believe. Something to do with holidays for poorer kids. He was a joiner to trade. I assume this was achieved before the army. In the HLI he was a signaller,I seem to remember he was with the Maryhill barracks. One story he did tell, or really my mum did, was of being so violently sea-sick on a trip to the Hebrides(?) that he was hospitalised for several days! There was also talk of being stationed in England. He spoke of being in North Africa and Italy. He was due to be de-mobbed in Ayr, a seaside resort 20miles or so from Glasgow, but jumped the train in Glasgow and went to the family, returning to his comrades the following day, in time for 'revalie'. He earned a spell 'at the army's pleasure' for this. I've reached a time in my life where I'd like to fill inthe gaps, as much for my children as for myself. Anything you can contribute would be great, even if it appears inconsequential to you. Many thanks for 'listening' Ian |

As always I am offerering to visit grave sites near Kleve (and just over the Dutch border) and my next visit is planned for November for the Memorial service. So far I have visited 3 or 4 War Cemetries within easy reach of Kleve including Overloon, Mook and Jonkerbos. As in the past, I would be only to pleased to lay flowers and take photographs on behalf of those who can't attend. If you would like me to do so, please get in touch. Keep visiting the site and help others to know that there are still people in this world who care about the fallen soldiers. |

| Message : | I have been asked to research some stones that are located in the playground at St Josephs School in Raglan Street, Mayhill Glasgow - the street was originally known as Lyon Street and I have been told that the stones are a war memorial for the soldiers of the HLI who were killed during the first world war it appears that nearly 100 men were lost all from Lyon Street and that the stons are in their memory. It also appears that a plaque containing the soldiers names was commissioned and that on the 11th of November each year this plaque would be displayed in Lyon Street does anyone have any information about the stones and the whereabouts of the plaque as the school has a great interest in this matter. I am at present a serving WO2 with the 52nd Lowland Regiment and am eager to assist in this quest - it appears that the plaque was displayed in a pub possibly the "Mile Stone" which used to be in Garscube Road which has since been demolished- can anyone help??????? |

In Tobruk in June 1942, with the enemy advancing, he buried a diary of his experiences, along with his regimental badges and ID, in the desert before being taken prisoner. The diary was found by an Italian Army captain and 23 years later was returned to my father via the Sunday Express. It is a moving account of his personal experiences. |
