| Message : | My link with the 1/4 K.O.Y.L.I. I grew up in Reddish Stockport never knowing my grandad Walter Wilde, because he died in 1947.However he left a lasting legacy. My dad Walter H.Wilde was born in 1919 in Hall Green(Wakefield)Yorks. Sadly at Easter 2000 i lost my father,it was only then that i came across his birth certificate,my fathers full name being Walter Hooge Wilde. I think by giving my father the middle name "Hooge"it was a lasting tribute by my grandfather, too his comrades and the town of "HOOGE" during their service in the the first world war. My grandfathers details being: No.2811 later 603963 PTE Walter WILDE - KINGS OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY later LABOUR CORPS I also believe he received the following medals: 1914-15 Star British War Medal Victory Medal Entered theatre of operations -France-13 April 1915 Silver War Badge issued If any other details come to light regarding my grandfather i would welcome the contact. Regards Ken Wilde |

If anyone can help me I would be truly obliged. My son is aged 16 years and I think it of paramount importance that he fully understands the part that his great-uncle, along with the thousands of other brave souls, played in the shaping of our history. |

He knew about me before he left the country. My mother, who is dead now, told me he was supposed to take part, in the invasion of Normandy. We never heard from him after that, I dont blame him, they were just teenagers. I once had a small snapshot of him, which shows a slender man whith a cigarette in his hand. My mother always said I was very much alike him, especially the eyes. He was a bugler, she told me. People may think, why is she doing this after all this years. I really dont know, but all of a sudden, I wanted to, when I was surfing on the Net. Maybe I have siblings out there, I have three children, and eight grandchildren. Maybe someone who see this, can tell me something about my father. God bless, Iris. |

| Message : | GREETINGS FROM CANADA For some time I have been searching for information about my Grandfather's service with the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry prior to and during WW1; 1914 in particular. What I do know is this: Private Francis Long 8575 was taken prisoner at Mons (or Le Cateau) and spent the remainder of the war on a German farm. He was a brick mason and contractor in England prior to his service, but on this farm, he learned two significant things; the crafts involved in farming and he became fluent in German. He was treated very well by the German farmers particularly after they were investigated by their authorities for hoarding grain. My grandfather was questioned, in English, but did not turn them in -- he lied for them. They then treated him especially well for the duration, and taught him the German language and the craft of running a mixed farm. After repatriation, he and his wife, Lily (nee.Oxby) and their children (my father was the eldest) settled in Nottingham. In Nottingham, he resumed his work as a mason and contractor. Jumping ahead to 1927, he moved his family to Canada and chose to buy a farm in the Canadian prairie province of Alberta. He was very successful at farming and also worked constructing many government buildings throughout Alberta. What I would love to have is my grandfather's service record, information about any medals he may have earned, exactly which Battalion,Division, and Corp the K.O.Y.L.I. was part of in August 1914 and who were his commanding officers, and especially any PHOTOS of the regiment training or in action prior to this date. I would be eternally grateful for any information or data regarding my grandfather's service or where I might find such items. Yours very truly, Richard Long 1127 Bennet Drive Port Coquitlam British Columbia Canada V3C 6H2 1-604-941-4940 email: dickandjaneare@shaw.ca |

| Message : | Hi, I am researching on behalf of my Grandfather. His father, Arthur Holding, served in the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in the First World War. He fought in Ypres and the Somme and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct medal and the Russian Cross of St. George both of which he donated to Leeds Museum a few years after the War. They have records showing he gave them but do not know where they are and will not help my grandad trace them. He was also mentioned in Despatches. I am knew to researching so any help anyone could give me on good sites to go etc would be much appreciated. Email me at julie.harwood@virgin.net. Obviously my grandad is not trying to get the medals, he just wants to know they are in a safe place as apparently only 3 Russian Cross' of St George were awarded to British service men. Many thanks. |
