Message : I thought readers might like a translation of the posting left in June by Klaus Doenecke. It concerns the liberation of a village near Minden called Frille by the Ox and Bucks..... In the context of a project for the processing of the Duesseldorf police history we have discovered that a unit of the Ox and Bucks, liberated a small village named Frille (near Minden), between 5 and 7 April 1945. In a hall in this village about 800 to 1000 personnel documents of the Duesseldorf security police had been stored, in order to protect these against allied air raids on Duesseldorf. The documents were guarded and administered by a command of the Duesseldorf security police. Are there still former members of the Ox and Bucks, which can remember the liberation of Frille? Does the war diary of the unit still exist? Does anyone know the whereabouts of these personnel documents? Or references to the arrest of the Duesseldorf policemen in Frille? For our further work on the processing of the Duesseldorf police history clarifying these questions would be very important, because we possess no copies of the personnel documents. The original documents may also assist in prosecuting individual officials in war crimes.

Message : Pegasus Bridge. False claims. While in the Transit Camp at Tarrant Rushton our 'D' Company Clerk listed everyone who was to travel in the six Horsa gliders. This was done in case any ended in the sea or otherwise went astray. Fortunately our force commander, the late Major John Howard, retained the lists and, 16 years ago, with his permission, I circulated the lists to the then 51 known survivors of the original 180-man force and to Airborne related museums. In post-war years hundreds of people have claimed to have been members of that famous Coup de Main force. So many, in fact, that to have carried them all would have probably required a dozen or more extra gliders! So please, if you were not there, do not make false claims because, as correspondent to the 21 currenmtly known survivors, I hate having to tell relatives and friends that their contact has told them a very tall story. Denis Edwards PS: My book 'The Devil's Own Luck' - From Pegasus Bridge to the Baltic Sea as an Airborne Sniper - 1944/45 - p[ublished by pen-and-sword books contains an appendix listing the 180 personnel who took part in that famous operation.

This was done in case any landed in the sea or were otherwise lost. Fortunately our Commander, the late Major John Howard, DSO, CdeG, retained the original hand-written lists and for the past 15 years all known survivors have held copies, as have Regimental Museums and the Memorial Pegasus Museum beside Pegasus Bridge. Prior to arriving at Monte Camino I think that my grandfather came ashore at Salerno as part of the 56th London Black cat Division. This division was one of two that made up the British X Corps which was under the command of General Richard McCreery. The division was merged as part of the US Fifth Army under General Mark Clark. The 56th Division (167 Brigade) was made up from the 8 & 9 Royal Fusiliers and the 7th Battalion Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry. The assault on Camino situated 10 miles to the south of Monte Cassino covering route 6 commenced on the 5th of November 1943. The 56th Division and her sister division suffered 50% casualties during the initial stages of action. Monte Camino was finally taken by the 46th/56th Divisions on the 6th December 1943. The 56th Division was also made up of the folowing: 168 Brigade, 1 London Scottish, 1 London Irish, 10 Royal Berkshires. 169 Brigade,2/5 Queen's, 2/6 Queen's, 2/7 Queen's. 201 Guards Brigade, 6 Grenadier, 3 Coldstream, 2 Scots.
