| Message : | I am helping my half-brother research his family history. I have just discovered that his g-g-father Richard Smith was a band master - I believe in the RMLI (RMA). It appears that a Joseph Radford was also a musician in the RMA, and he was Richards son Robert's uncle (in law), who later married Roberts widow, and became her second husband. Can anyone help me with this. Also were the RMLI (RMA) in India around 1811 - 1831)? Gloria Lumley |

| Message : | The Royal Marine Light Infantry are remembered for their part in the battle of Waireka in Taranaki, New Zealand in March 1860 by a hatchment on the wall of St Mary,s Anglican Church, New Plymouth, New Zealand. The day was saved by a detachment of sailors off HMS Niger and I presume the RMLI were part of that group. Niger also has a hatchment. Your timeline does not mention the RMLI taking part in the Maori Wars. They are remembered in New Plymouth along with hatchments and remembrances for the Taranaki Militia and Volunteers, 50,68,12,43,65,18,70,58,14,40,57 Regiments,RE, RA and Friendly Maoris. The British Regiments and Corps all served in and around New Plymouth and Taranaki and St Mary's was essentially the Garrison Church and as it was made of stone it was also a denfensible place of refuge for women and children. My great great grandfather, John Elmes arrived in Auckland NZ with his wife and two daughters as a Corporal in the Royal Sappers and Miners. My great grandfather, also John Elmes was born in the British Army garrison in Auckland, NZ in 1853. My great great grandfather was discharged to a Chelsea out pension 28 Feb 1860 as a Sgt in the Royal Engineers. The pension was 1/6 per day and he drew it for 35 years. His service was for 22 1/2 years. Not a bad deal. Best regards John Elmes |

| Message : | To the best of my knowledge my Great- Grandfather, Arthur Bunton received the "Legion D' Honor" from Queen Victoria in recognition of bravery in action during the Crimea War. Apparently he rescued his wounded Superior Officer. He lived in Queensway in London until his death, receiving a war pension. There is also a street named Bunton Street in Woolwich South London, near where the original RMLI barracks would have been. I can not be sure but maybe the two are connected. |
