Hello All I am a former member of 1 RGJ bugle platoon and peninsula band can I just say hello to all that I served with,, I recently went on a visit with my other half as she has allways heard me talk about Shrewsbury and Winchester a but never visited. I have just came back and was taken aback to say the least when I have seen what they have done to the Winchester barracks.. It is now all privately owned flats and the guard room where I once visited for a beasting session is now the gateshouse CAFE. my old friend Dave Seagar has his photos in there for all to se. H elike me served in the 80s all most of them anyway. I was good to see that Shrewsbury has not changed and you can still get a good pint in the kings head and the hole in the wall. Just saw the posting above. Thought I'd add my comments. 1, 2, 3 LI Bands were reformed into Salamanca and Corunna Bands in 1984. I served with LI Depot band 76-79, 1 LI from 80 to 84, then LI Salamanca Band until 1990. LI Salamanca Band, under Denis Burton, returned to Winchester UK after becoming attached to 2 LI in Deilinghofen West Germany. Old boys included Tim Teal, whom I see occassionaly and swap xmas cards, the late Ginge Clive Roberts, Craig Allan, Bob Whittock-Knott, Monty Beaumont, Lea Wiggins, Rimsky Goodwin, and a host of others who all contributed to a very successful and friendly bunch of chaps...no ladies at that time! It was rumoured that I had a No.1 dress uniform and even participated in a small amount of band life/work and didn't ski all the time! Although 23 months on snow in my last 36 months was some going...even for me! I always arranged the ski racing/training when Denis was doing his PSM at KH and bluffed my way past 2 BSM's. By the time he returned I'd be off south to the alps and never got caught, by the time I'd return it was easter leave and all was forgotton! To all who remember the good (Iserlohner Schutzenn Fest) and bad times (not many)greetings. David (Henry) Marshall Added: November 12, 2007 |

The Band and Bugles of The Light Division have been based in Sir John Moore Barracks on the outskirts of Winchester since their formation in 1994. They succeeded the Regimental Bands of The Light Infantry and Royal Green Jackets that served in Winchester for many years before that. It is fitting, therefore, that their final concert as The Band and Bugles of The Light Division should be performed in Winchester Cathedral, the very heart of the city. Although a time of farewell, the 1st February 2007 marks the dawn of a new regiment, The Rifles, an amalgamation of four famous Regiments the Devonshire and Dorset Light Infantry, the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Light Infantry, the Light Infantry and The Royal Green Jackets. The Regimental Headquarters of The Rifles will be located in Peninsula Barracks. The Band and Bugles of The Rifles will continue to uphold over 200 years of tradition and look forward to maintaining a high-profile musical presence within Winchester. The Band comprises 35 musicians with 15 military buglers and produces a sound and spectacle which is unique in the military music world. We hope you will come to listen and enjoy their music as we say ‘farewell’ to The Light Division and embrace the future of The Rifles. Proceeds to the Light Division Benevolent Fund. Tickets: £20, £15 and £10 from the Cathedral Box Office (01962 857275). Available NOW Added: December 8, 2006 |
