BRITISH REGIMENTS IN THE AUSTRALIAN PENAL COLONIES 1831-1869

The history of British Penal Colonies on Norfolk Island, Port Arthur and Sarah's Island in Tasmania and the early settlements of NSW shows that (approximately) 63 British Soldiers from the County Regiments lived and died in the various places they were posted to in those changing times of Colonial rule. Recorded deaths are available of these men who served in the following: 63rd Regiment, 21st Regiment, 51st King's Own LI, 96th Regiment, 18th Hussars, Royal Artillery, 99th Regiment (The Lanarks), 12th Regiment, 4th (King's Own), 4th Foot, 11th, 39th (The Dorsets), 50th (Queen's Own) Royal West Kents. Many of the above Regiments were absorbed, changed or disbanded as time advanced, but can be traced in modern military regimental history. Anyone wishing to trace an ancestor might well consider a start here.

In many instances, the gravestones of the military dead are well preserved and have been photographed and recorded in publications that can be referred to. The URL to the lhs will show development so far and is under construction to include more detail as we process the information.

Gidday" from Australia.

This "First Post" from an ex DCLI comrade of the '53-'55 era with some time left before my "Use By" date expires (I hope). I'm writing to give encouragement to all Light Infantry soldiers of yesteryear to say that - these Guestbooks are a marvellous method of contacting former mates. Get your family to write a Post if you're unfamiliar with the parlance of the Internet.

If you have the time - read some of my Posts to other Guestbooks in the LI list - you'll see how the responses can build over a short time. History is important for all of us and everyone has their story - but - you tell yours now, and not leave it to another after you've been promoted 'upstairs'.

Personally, I'm now in contact with former mates from over 50 years ago from Bodmin Depot and the Caribbean and we're exchanging stories and photographs as if it all happened yesterday. Click on the hotlinked web page address to the left hand side shown under my name to see how history can develop in reality.

Tempus Fugit!! Winners make it happen!! (Denis Waitley).
