RSM HAROLD ROYFFE

Our 'Ole Mate Neil 'Swanny' Swanson has delivered! A long sought for photo of the RSM now appears on our "A" Company 1DCLI 1954 website. Just goes to show that a bit of effort and searching those albums, works sometimes and gives us all a great deal of pleasure to reflect on those glorious days of the 'Duke's'.

Swanny is back into Truro Hospital today for some more treatment and I for one look forward to hearing that 'tis all successful and our 'Ole Mate is back on his feet again, bantering and blogging as usual!

Get Well Swanny.

Hi All, my first trip shopping today since coming out of Hospital on Tuesday last, I met Gwen Passmore widow of Capt. Jan Passmore, as most DCLI as RSM Passmore. Having been requested to try and get Photos of JAN I asked Gwen if she had any and she replied that she did,nt have any Photos of him in his uniform at all!!! As I served with him in Bermuda and also 4/5th Bn TA DCLI I found it rather ODD. When stationed in Bermuda I was invited on Weekly basis to have a Pastie cooked by Gwennie, PROBER ANSOM OGGIE, since JAN has passed away Gwen has become rather reclusive and I find it hard to converse with her,she is very inverted? as if she has never come to terms with his passing and she appears to not want to speak about JAN, But I will always remember him as a first cla**oldier,CSM,RSM,and CAPTAIN and true friend, RIP JAN, Neil (Swanny) Swanson A COY 1stBn-4/5thBn DCLI, West Cwll Branch DCLI Association.

I am trying to find information about my great grandfather Patrick Nolan who was born in 1835 in either Liverpool or Ireland. In the census of 1881 he was a Private in the 32 Regiment Light Infantry stationed (with his wife and family) at Aldershot south camp. I understand he was a batman and had been in India, Ireland and Lancashire/Cheshire (possibly Duckinfield Barracks wher I think he met my great grandmother). Any information or guidance would be most gratefully received. In particular I am interested in how or why he may have joined a regiment asociated with Devon and Cornwall if he was Irish and Catholic and possibly born in Liverpool. I am also interested in where he may have been stationed and when as his children where born in various parts of the UK and Ireland. Did all soldiers take their families with them to live in barracks? Was he a batman and if so, who was his officer and what sort of role would he have? i hope you are able to shed some light o these issues. Thanks.

I have today visited Neil Swanson (Swanny) in Trliske Hospital Truro where I found him in good spirits. He was wired up to a drip which was feeding him his very important medication.
His dear wife Doris was with him.
He is a very sick man but to look at him you would not think so,
He is having Chemotherapy which may cause him to loose his hair but as he has not got much at the moment it wont make much difference.
His treatment will be spread over several weeks or even months but he is in an excellant hospital ward and with his fighting spirit I feel confident that he will soon be back telling us all about it.
He sends his regards to "ONE & ALL"
Will say another one for his and Doris tonight. God Bless Swanny.
Terry

TROOPSHIP EMPIRE CLYDE ASSOCIATION (PROPOSED)

Just a few (so far) Old 1DCLI Soldiers of the 1954 era, who travelled from Liverpool to the Caribbean in February 1954, have bandied around the notion to create a Commemorative Tankard for the occasion. Early days yet - so far as production, costs, availability and design - are concerned - BUT - enthusiasm is infectious and it looks as if it might actually happen.

An artist's rendition of the imaging on a sample tankard are shown in the STOP PRESS section of the DCLI Supplementary Photo website (click icon the lhs to open the URL) - where you can view progress to date.

Importantly of course, is the accuracy of the historical record of 1DCLI Company postings to the various locations - some of which a few of us know as being factual because we were there - but we are searching for the correct posting for "D" Company - Kingston or Newcastle? Can anyone help?

Carpe Diem!

1DCLI 1953-1957 Memorabilia and all that!

Many of the lads with Caribbean service are enthusiastic contributors to the DCLI Blog pages - particularly Wise & Wicked. Feel free to add to the 1,421 comments now clocked up in the past few months.

Topics range from mirthful reminiscences of Bermuda and Jamaica (so far) to insightful remarks about British MPs and local authorities. None of us has lost our humour or mickey taking skills.

In particular the Blog pages have brought many Old Mates together in their autumn years which in fact is resulting in Cornwall get-togethers and contributions of old photos for our 1DCLI websites. Open up the website or email addresses to the lhs - let's hear from you - cheps - GOYA!!

I am trying to locate our Grandfather-William HEAL. 23114 Corporal of DCLI.Unfortunately this is the only info we have according to Dads birth Certificate. We assumed he was killed in the Great War before Grandmother & he could marry. However, we have not been able to find a trace of him. These details were on the Birth Certificate of our Dad William John HEAL registration dated 8th Nov 1918(even though he was born 23rd Jun 1918).
Please if anyone can help I would be very grateful.
Kind Regards,
Pauline Gater.

I am trying to find any information regarding my father, Frederick Charles Lawrence Roberts, who served in the DCLI during the First World War. As far as i'm aware he served at Mons, Ypres and the Somme. He was born in Aberdare Mid Glamorgan between 1890 and 1895, and would have possibly enlisted in 1914.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
