I am researching my Gt Gt Grandfather and have come across his 1904 marriage cert. His name was Edward Ward and it states he was a Private in the Royal Marines but I cannot read his residence.
It looks like something 'Ground', Portsmouth. Would this have been a military residence perhaps?
Can anyone tell me where the RM's were based in 1904 in Portsmouth.

Many thanks

All i know of his military history is that he was in the R.M.L.I. he fought in the first world war of which he would never speak,he stayed in service until around 1929,about which he spoke volumes.he loved the marines,I used to have a photo of him in uniform at HMS CHATHAM.If any one can help me find out more about my dad I would be very grateful

I am currently researching my family tree and have come across Private PLY/2587(S) Sidney John Nurse of the 1st. Royal Marine Battalion Royal Navy Division Royal Marine Light Infantry who was killed in action on 8 October 1918.
Was the 1st. Battalion also known as the Drake Battalion?
Would be interested to know more about where Sidney Nurse have met his death?

My great great grandfather William Dart was a private in RMLI in the 1860s and 1870s in Devonport. Can somebody tell me if there are accessible information sources that would help me find out more about him? Any advice gratefully received.

While tracing my family tree, I have discovered a younger brother to my grandfather. The brother's name was Frederick Wells, born 16th June 1882. His parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Wells. Frederick was born in Alton, Hampshire, but at the outbreak of WWI we think he lived in Westbourne, West Sussex. The name F Wells R.M.L.I. appears on the memorial cross for WWI in the churchyard at Westbourne, and we are sure this is the uncle we are looking for.
I have no infromation regarding his service number or rank, or where he served and was killed. I would be grateful for anyone who can throw some light on this research for me please.
All emails will be answered. Thank you.
Brian Wells.

Looking for history of my Great Uncle P/1594 Reginald Henry DURDLE RMLI Portsmouth Div. Died 13.10 1921. I have found his grave in Downton where his parents lived. His grave is a Commonwealth War Graves pattern and he is listed on the CWG site as being war dead. Perhaps died from it but not in it?

A very informative site, could do with the answers to some questions asked though, in the
Guestbook. It would help others in their quest to find anwsers. Guideing people like me through the maze on tracing former members of the RMLI and it's history. Regards to all. John Johnson
