Light Infantry - Obituaries
- 1986 to 2000
Nicholas Fraser, Pte.
- died May 1999 after sustaining a head injury in a
fall whilst at home on leave. ( date or age not given
in Silver Bugle ) After completing a degree, he enlisted
into the LI. and following training he was posted to
1 LI. in Cyprus where he joined D Coy. Whilst serving
in Cyprus he was able to complete several adventurous
training courses, as well as taking part in a full raft
of IS Duties and Exercise Saffron Sands in Jordan.
S.A. ( Ted ) Moulding
- died 6th March 1999. ( age not given in Silver bugle
) He died suddenly at home in Tidworth. Enlisted into
the LI. on 10th. May 1971 and following training was
posted to the 2nd. Bn. at Colchester were he joined
B Coy. A year later he was posted to the Anti Tank Pl.
Support Coy. and remained with the Pl. until 1976. He
moved to the MT Pl. whilst the Bn. was serving in Lemgo
and was later promoted to Sgt within the Pl. He remained
in the MT Pl. until 1989 when he then became the Families
Sgt. at Tidworth, a post he held until 1991 when he
went to JCU ( NI ) and remained in post until his discharge
in 1993. This was his only posting away from the Bn.
in his 22yrs. service. He had served in West Germany,
Kenya, Gibraltar and the UK including several tours
in Northern Ireland. He retired with the rank of Sgt.
Mick Belsom - died 1997
- 1LI Recce platoon passed away in Cornwall 1997, all
the best love his wife, daughters and grandchildren.

Larry David Merchant, C/Sgt.
- died 5th September 1996, aged 37yrs. Enlisted into
the army as a junior leader on 21st. August 1975. On
completion of his basic training he was posted to 2
LI. in Lemgo, West Germany. He also saw service in Kenya,
Canada, America, Gibraltar and seven tours of duty in
Northern Ireland. In the twenty years he spent in the
Regt. he served initially in a rifle company and the
following promotions to the rank of Sgt and then CSgt.
he worked within the administrative side of the Bn.
as the Clothing Sgt. Officers Mess Manager and Accommodation
SNCO. He was an extremely popular member of the Bn.
and will be sadly missed by everyone.
Mark ( Cozy ) Powell, Sgt.
- died 16th. September 1994, aged 34yrs. His death resulted
from a fatal gun shot wound whilst serving in BATUS,
Canada. Born in Weston-Super- Mare he enlisted into
LI .in August 1976 and following training was posted
to 1 LI. He served in 1 LI. for most of his career including
several tours in Northern Ireland. He attended many
Infantry courses and by June 1993 had reached the rank
of Sgt. His main strength was in gunnery which led him
to serving 2yrs. at Lulworth as a gunnery instructor.
He joined 2 LI. after the merger and worked in the gunnery
wing, where he ran regular cadres and many soldiers
have gained from the knowledge and experience he has
passed on to them. He was buried at the Aldershot Military
Cemetary by a Burial Party from 2 LI. and a Firing Party
from 1 LI. A Memorial Service was held on Monday 17th.
October 1994 by the Bn. at which his wife was present.
Michael Peter Lyons -
rank not known ( known affectionaly as Leo ) died 28th
July 1992, aged 40yrs. Enlisted into the LI. at Wakefield
on the 24th. August 1967 and following training was
posted to 1 LI. He served the majority of his career
with this Bn. employed mainly in the MT Pltn. and the
Training Wing. He was later poted to the LI.Depot at
Shrewsbury. His Final posting was that of SPSI with
HQ Coy. 5 LI. He retired from this post on completion
of his service.
Stephen Wray.Cpl. - died
22nd. July 1992, as a result of a RTA whilst travelling
between Airport Camp and Holdfast Camp on the Western
Highway in Belize. ( age not given in Silver Bugle )
He enlisted as a Junior Soldier on 20th. August 1979
and following training was posted to 1 LI. on the 24th.
November 1980 and joined C Coy. In 1984 he started work
in the Medical Centre where he established himself as
a hard working and thoroughly professional RMA1 Medic.
As a medic he served in the UK, Northern Ireland. Falkland
Islands, Canada, Berlin and Belize.
Christopher Beadle. Pte.
- died 27th April 1992 as a result of a RTA whilst walking
on the A 338 at Shipton Bellinger. ( age not given in
Silver Bugle ) he enlisted into the LI. in 1989 and
following training was posted in 1990 to 1 LI. in Berlin.
he also served with the Bn. in Canada and the UK. He
was a popular member of the Bn.
Stephen Eyles. Sgt. -
died 1st December 1991, having been in a Coma since
March 91 following a RTA. He died in the Royal National
Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath. He enlisted
into the LI. in 1970 and was posted to 3 LI. He served
in the UK, West Germany, Northern Ireland, Kenya and
Cyprus. In 1982 he joined 3 RGJ and served with this
Bn. in the UK. West Germany, Canada, Falkland Islands
and Gibraltar. In February 1990 he returned to serve
in 3 LI. He was a popular and much respected member
of the Bn.
Kevin Wyatt. Pte. - died
9th. November 1991, ( age not given in Silver Bugle
) whilst serving with 1 LI. in Bulford. His death resulted
from a RTA. Enlisted into the LI. at Taunton and joined
as an adult soldier at Sir John Moore Brks. at Winchester
in 1988. Following training he was posted to 1 LI. in
Berlin in late 1989 and joined 1 Pl. A Coy. Several
months later he was posted to The Milan Pl. Support
Coy. He served with this Pltn in Berlin and then Bulford
from August 1991.
Capt. Robin Williams.
- died April 1991 from injuries sustained in RTA. (
date or age not given in Silver Bugle ) Enlisted into
the KSLI as a Junior Leader in 1962, posted to 1 KSLI.
at Seaton Brks. Plymouth in late 1963 and joined C Coy.
Following the Coy's tour of Honduras he transferred
to the Mortar Pl. By 1968 he had risen to the rank of
Sgt and joined the Signal Pl. of what was now 3 LI.
In 1972 the Bn. was stationed in Minden, West Germany
and following further promotion he returned to C Coy.
as CQMS. from C Coy. he moved again to the Mortar Pl.
with the rank of WO. and then to the Signal Pl. He was
then appointed RQMS and from this appointment to that
of local RSM at Dhekelia Cyprus. On return to the UK
he was posted for the first time outside the Bn. as
WO1 with the University OTC at Nottingham. From 1982-84
he served on secondment to the Sultan of Brunei's Forces
for which he was awarded the
Brunei Clasp. On his return to the UK in 1984 he was
Commissioned to Command 32 CTT at Shrewsbury, after
which he returned to 3 LI. as the MTO. He retired from
the army after 26yrs. service in 1988.
Neil Price.Pte. - died
13th.December 1986,aged 19yrs. from Leukemia. A serving
soldier in 2LI. A Bearer Party was provided at St. Cuthberts
Church, Hartlepool for the funeral service and commanded
by Maj. R.V.Brims, MBE.
